Target Market Focus

I know you’ve heard the saying over and over again… “focus on your target market!”

It’s true.

target-market-businessIf you don’t know who your target market is, then you’re going to miss out on a huge opportunity to get the people who are interested in your product or service to even know you exist, better yet – your competitor will be so happy — one less competitor!

I remember thinking years ago, “I don’t have to focus on that, I’ll just tell everybody – that way everybody knows!”  WRONG!

You see, everybody is not interested – I wasted valuable time pitching to an audience who was not in the least bit interested, while all the time wondering, where are the sales? LOL!

One of the biggest mistakes that a new entrepreneur makes is to launch off into business without knowing who their target market is. They may have a great idea, a great set of skills, all of the tools and plenty of time and money – yet a few months later they’re struggling to make ends meet and can’t quite figure out why.

I mean really, why would you spend time talking to people who don’t have a need or want for your product or service?  I call it “Bucking the System.” (we’ll talk more about that in a later post ;-)

I remember being just that hard-headed but, thank God I got away from my stinking thinking that kept my bank account at zero!

What Does Target Market Mean Exactly?

Target Market BlueprintTarget market is the term used to describe a group of consumers being targeted to purchase your products or utilize your service.  Another word that may be substituted would be to call this group your ‘niche’.

Steps You Should Take To Identify Your Target Market

Question: Who would like to buy what you have to offer?

Don’t just say ‘Women’. That is a gender identification, not a target market.

All women are not alike. They have a wide variety of lifestyles, values and interests.

Don’t just say ‘Golfers’. That identifies a group of people who partake of a sporting activity but it’s not a target market.

Are you targeting the ever so often golfer with a cheap tips video or are you targeting the lifestyle golfer who travels regularly to play in competitions.

Be very specific.

Your site is a marketing goldmine. With the price of gold going up I can be rich by just cashing in some of the gems I am finding on this site.
Your emphasis on target markets is critical for social media. Even setting up blogs can misfire and generate wasted efforts if a target market focus is not use. Thanks and keep up the great work

@Rose ~ A lot of start up businesses don’t know, what they don’t know, that’s why it’s important to share what I’ve learned in hopes someone else will grab a gem every now and then ;-) Thanks for the kudos!

It is difficult to identify potential customers for our business, product or service as people are constantly changing, but if we know our target audience we can better learn how to market to them.

That’s the key Connie! Knowing your audience ;-)
